Who is this course for?

These courses are for anyone who needs proper training and assessment to operate materials handling equipment safely and confidently.

This includes:

  • New operators starting out
  • Experienced operators who need recognised certification
  • Operators moving to a different type of equipment
  • Operators due refresher training
  • Employers who want staff trained to a national standard

What’s covered?

Training is delivered to ITSSAR standards and is tailored to the type of equipment being used.

You’ll cover:

  • Your responsibilities as an operator
  • Health and safety rules and best practice
  • Equipment controls and safe operating methods
  • Load handling, stacking and stability
  • Workplace hazards and pedestrian safety
  • Daily pre-use checks and defect reporting
  • Practical training followed by formal assessment

Entry requirements

Requirements may vary slightly depending on the course, but generally:

  • Minimum age is usually 16 (some courses require 18+)
  • A basic understanding of spoken and written English
  • Ability to meet course safety and assessment requirements (reasonable adjustments considered where appropriate)
  • For conversion courses, you must already hold certification for a similar type of equipment

How long does it last?

Course length depends on experience and equipment type:

  • Novice training: 3–5 days
  • Experienced operator: 1–3 days
  • Conversion training: 1–3 days
  • Refresher training: 1 day
  • Banksman training: usually 1 day

Certification

After successfully completing the training and assessment:

The ITSSAR Operator Card is widely recognised by employers and confirms you’ve been trained and assessed to a national standard.
