Category C+E – Articulated HGV Training

Who this course is for

This course is for anyone who wants to drive articulated HGVs.

It’s suitable if you:

  • Already have a Category C licence and want to upgrade to C+E
  • Want to go straight from a car licence to an articulated HGV

Good to know

The training route is slightly different depending on whether you’re upgrading from Category C or going straight from car to C+E. Going straight from car to C+E can save time and money and get you on the road sooner.

What you’ll learn

Your training focuses on real, everyday driving skills, including:

  • Coupling and uncoupling an articulated vehicle
  • Safe driving and correct road positioning
  • Reversing and manoeuvring
  • Load safety and vehicle checks
  • Full preparation for the DVSA driving test

Entry requirements

Car (Category B) to C+E

Before practical training and tests, you’ll need:

  • A full car licence (Category B)
  • A valid D4 medical (we can arrange this)
  • Theory Test (Module 1a)
  • Hazard Perception Test (Module 1b)

These must be passed before taking the practical driving test (Modules 3a & 3b).

If you plan to drive professionally, you’ll also need:

  • Driver CPC Module 2
  • Driver CPC Module 4

Category C to C+E

Before training starts, you’ll need:

  • A full Category C licence
  • A valid D4 medical

No additional theory or hazard perception tests are needed when upgrading from Category C.

Everything in one place

We take care of everything for you, including:

  • D4 medical (if needed)
  • Off-road training and assessment (Module 3a)
  • On-road driving test preparation (Module 3b)
  • Driver CPC Module 4 training and test (where required)

You’ll take your DVSA driving test in our vehicle, so there are no surprises on the day.

Course duration

Training is delivered in 4-hour sessions. The total hours depend on your experience and entry route.

Typical course lengths:

  • Car to C+E: 28, 32 or 36 hours
  • Category C to C+E: 16 or 20 hours
